INTERNATIONAL SAVE THE VAQUTA DAY

In 2013, Muskwa had a dream. What if a single, unified event could take place on both coasts (plus Hawaii) of the United States, dedicated to raising awareness of the obscure vaquita porpoise? The idea grew out of an awareness event initially created with the Waikiki Aquarium of Honolulu, the first aquarium to support what would eventually become International Save the Vaquita Day. With the help of allied organizations (especially the American Cetacean Society) and participating aquariums, National Save the Vaquita Day 2013 encompassed 10 venues in Hawaii, California, Oregon, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Massachusetts.

The next year, with the broader participation of the VIVA Vaquita Coalition and additional allied groups, National Save the Vaquita Day became International Save the Vaquita Day, with events in Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia, Austria, and the Netherlands in addition to an expanded group of venues in the United States.
